Rapid City, at an elevation of 3202 feet (976 meters), sits on the edge of the Black Hills which gives us a milder climate than on the plains to the East. Spring does arrive slowly, though. The average daily high temperature in May is 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celcius) and the average low is 41 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius). However, a recent study revealed that Rapid City has the most variable weather in the United States. We have had snow in May as well as 90 degree temperatures. You may want to go to Weather.com and search for the 10 day forecast for Rapid City prior to packing for your trip.
The population of Rapid City is approximate 70,000 with an equal number of people living in the surrounding areas. One result of our pioneer heritage and low population density is that people tend to be more open and friendly than in some parts of the United States. It is common for strangers to greet you on the street (just say “hello” or “good morning” in response) and for store clerks to tell you to “Have a nice day”.
Tipping is customary in restaurants and taxis. The usual tip is 15%-20% of the bill.
